About Dr. Brian Canfield, LMFT

Dr. Brian S. Canfield specializes in marriage counseling and couple therapy.  As a licensed psychologist (AR) and licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (FL and LA), he has worked with more than 2,600 couples over the past several decades to help them bring about needed changes in their lives and relationships.

Dr. Canfield is former clinical director of the Ph.D. program in Marriage and Family Therapy at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, and currently holds appointment as Professor of Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida.  He received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Louisiana Tech University; and his Doctor of Education degree in Counseling and Guidance, with a program emphasis in marriage and family therapy from Texas A&M University in Commerce. He is a Past President of the International Association for Marriage and Family Counselors (IAMFC) and a Fellow and Past President of the American Counseling Association (ACA).  Dr. Canfield serves as founding Board Member of the International Association of Psychology and Counseling (www.intapc.org)

Dr. Canfield is an internationally-recognized expert in the field of family counseling. He is the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the "Distinguished Leadership Award" of the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors", the "Advocate of the Year" award of the Florida Counseling Association, and the "Life Time Achievement Award" of the Louisiana Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.  His clinical work and publications in the area of applied cybernetics - examining dyadic relationships and the inter-relationship of individuals within groups and relational systems, and his research in the area of "job and family stress" - are widely cited in the professional literature and used in a number of clinical training programs in the United States and abroad.  For the past 20 years, he has served as Director of the week-long annual Oxford Institute for Marriage and Couple Therapy which is held each Summer at St. Hilda's College, Oxford University (UK).
