Dr. Brian S. Canfield helps clients address a wide-range of relationship and mental health issues. He specializes in marriage counseling and couples therapy and has worked with more than 2,500 couples over the past thirty years. He maintains clinical offices in Louisiana and Florida, and is licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist (Florida and Louisiana), Mental Health Counselor (Louisiana), and Psychologist (Arkansas.)
Dr. Canfield received his B.A. and M.A degrees from Louisiana Tech University and his doctoral degree from Texas A&M University in Commerce. Dr. Canfield has held faculty appointment as a professor at several universities - including the University of San Diego, Southeastern Louisiana University, Florida Atlantic University, and the University of Louisiana at Monroe where he served as clinical director of the marriage and family therapy program. Dr. Canfield is a Past President of the International Association for Marriage and Family Counselors (IAMFC), and a Fellow and Past President of the American Counseling Association (ACA).
Dr. Canfield is an internationally recognized expert in the field of family counseling. He is the recipient of a number of professional awards and honors, including the "Leadership, Vision, and Professional Excellence Award" of the Australian Cultural Family Therapy Association, the "Distinguished Leadership Award" of the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors", and the "Life Time Achievement Award" of the Louisiana Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. His research in the area of applied cybernetics - examing dyadic relationships and the inter-relationship of individuals within groups and relational systems - is widely cited in the professional literature. His book and book chapters are used in a number of clinical training programs in the United States and abroad. He serves as Director of the Oxford Family Counseling Institute which is held each July at St. Hilda's College, Oxford University. A native of Shreveport, Louisiana, Dr. Canfield is the father of five children. He is married to Irene LeBlanc Canfield, who specializes in substance abuse and addiction issues with women.
