Dr. Brian S. Canfield, LMFT, LPC

Dr. Brian S. Canfield helps clients address a wide-range of relationship and mental health issues. He specializes in marriage counseling and couples therapy and has worked with more than 2,500 couples over the past thirty years.  He is licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist (Florida and Louisiana), Mental Health Counselor (Louisiana), and Psychologist (Arkansas.) 

Dr. Canfield received his B.A. and M.A degrees from Louisiana Tech University and his doctoral degree in Counseling and Family Therapy from Texas A&M University in Commerce.  Dr. Canfield is a former clinical director of the Ph.D. program in marriage and family therapy at the University of Louisiana at Monroe and currently holds appointment as Professor of Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida.  Dr. Canfield is a Past President of the International Association for Marriage and Family Counselors (IAMFC), and a Fellow and Past President of the American Counseling Association (ACA).

A native of Shreveport, Louisiana; Dr. Canfield is an internationally recognized expert in the fields of counseling and family therapy.   He is the recipient of a number of professional awards and honors, including the "Distinguished Leadership Award" of the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors", the 2016 "Advocate of the Year" award of the Florida Counseling Association, and the "Life Time Achievement Award" of the Louisiana Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.  His clinical work and publications in the area of applied cybernetics - examining dyadic relationships and the inter-relationship of individuals within groups and relational systems, and his research in the area of "job and family stress" - are widely cited in the professional literature and used in a number of clinical training programs in the United States and abroad.  For the past 18 years, he has served as Director of the Oxford Family Counseling Institute which is held each July at St. Hilda's College, Oxford University.
