Dr. Brian S. Canfield is an internationally recognized clinician and researcher in the area of marital and dyadic relationship issues. Dr. Canfield specializes in marriage counseling and couples therapy, and has worked with more than 2,500 couples over the past 30 years. He maintains clinical offices in Louisiana and Florida, and is a licensed as a marriage and family therapist (Florida and Louisiana), licensed Mental Health Counselor (Louisiana), and licensed psychologist (Arkansas.)
Dr. Canfield received his doctoral degree from Texas A&M University in Commerce with a major in Counseling and Guidance and program emphasis in marriage and family therapy. Dr. Canfield has held faculty appointments as a full professor at several universities - including the University of San Diego, Southeastern Louisiana University, and the University of Louisiana at Monroe where he served as clinical director of the nationally-accredited masters and doctoral programs in marriage and family therapy.
Throughout his career, Dr. Canfield has been active in professional service. He is a past president of the Louisiana Mental Health Counselors Association (LMHCA), a Past President of the Louisiana Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (LAMFT), and a Past President of the International Association for Marriage and Family Counselors (IAMFC). Dr. Canfield is a Fellow and served as the 56th President of the American Counseling Association (ACA).
Dr. Canfield's research in the area of applied cybernetics - examing dyadic relationships and the inter-relationship of individuals within groups and relational systems - is widely cited in the professional literature. His co-authored book and book chapters are used in a number of clinical training programs in the United States and abroad. He has been an invited speaker and consultant to professional groups and universities throughout the United States and internationally. He serves as director of the Oxford Family Counseling Institute which is held each summer in Oxford, England (United Kingdom.) A native of Shreveport, Louisiana, Dr. Canfield is the father of five children. He is married to Irene LeBlanc Canfield, who is also a therapist with Family Counseling Associates.
